DescriptionMae, my working Plummer terrier April 2015.jpg
English: Plummer terrier. An all round working terrier that excels at ratting.
English: Mae is a typical Plummer terrier, around 12 to 13" at the shoulder. The breed was borne out of a mix of Jack Russell terriers worked to rat in the 1960's by the late Dr David Brian Plummer. He added Fell and fox terrier to the mix and at one point beagle to improve scenting abilities, and bull terrier to improve heads and jaw strength. The dogs began to breed true to type in the 1970's and 80's and their smooth, fiery copper and white coats now define these superb working terriers that excel at killing rats and bushing for rabbits. They will do earth work if entered properly within the guidelines of the laws on hunting in England and Wales. They make good pets but are not for novice dog owners, requiring a lot of exercise and stimulation. Agile, with a high prey drive and superb noses, these terriers are now represented by three clubs, the oldest being the Plummer Terrier Association ( c. 1994), dedicated to the welfare and working of the proto breed with special emphasis on keeping a controlled gene pool to further type and ensure a healthy working terrier.
